Gender discrimination a problem for many tech companies

While all employers in Florida should be aware of the dangers of discriminating against employees because of their gender, it appears that certain industries continue to have a problem with workplace culture. Specifically, companies in the tech sector seem to have a problem with how women are treated.

According to USA Today, one survey found that 66 percent of women in the tech industry reported that their gender left them feeling left out compared to their male peers. In addition, advances of a sexual nature were reported by 60 percent of respondents, and more than half of those incidents were perpetrated by a superior.

Gender discrimination can take many forms. Some women in the industry have spoken out about receiving less pay, being denied promotions and receiving poor evaluations based on their gender. Many also cite unwanted sexual attention and harassment as discriminatory workplace conditions.

And despite efforts by some to combat this issue, the problem persists. In fact, the Miami Herald reports that one South Florida company hired a woman as a strategic marketer specifically to address the gender problem. That woman is now suing the company for gender discrimination, claiming she was harassed and ignored because she was a woman.

A large part of the problem is that women are severely outnumbered by men at many of these companies. In response to this and similar lawsuits, some companies are making a push to hire a more diverse workforce. In the meantime, companies who wish to avoid litigation would be wise to enact strict policies against discrimination and enforce those policies without exception.
