Reviewing employment discrimination lawsuits in Florida

For businesses of all sizes, there are a wide variety of time-consuming and stressful issues that may arise. After all, between ensuring customer satisfaction, hiring employees and managing inventories, many employers have a lot on their plate. That said, it is very important for employers to ensure that employees are not discriminated against and take the appropriate course of action if they believe discrimination may have occurred. In Miami, Florida, and across the nation, lawsuits involving allegations of workplace discrimination and civil rights violations can have damaging consequences.

When it comes to employment discrimination, there are many examples, such as discriminating against a worker because of their ethnicity, religion, disability, gender or age. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are a number of laws which prohibit age discrimination. For example, certain employees are protected from age discrimination under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, which the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission enforces. For employers, it is important to recognize the various types of discrimination and do everything to prevent instances of discrimination from occurring in the workplace to avoid business litigation.

The Equal Opportunity Employment Commission published statistics on their website which reveal the full extent of business litigation involving discrimination in Florida. In 2014, there were more than 7,500 individual charge filings, accounting for 8.5 percent of such charges throughout the United States. Clearly, it is crucial for employers across the nation to realize the prevalence of these cases and identify the best path forward if they find themselves in the center of a discrimination lawsuit or any employment litigation suit (sexual harassment, wrongful discharge, etc.).
