Reviewing federal employment discrimination laws

From hiring new workers to dealing with allegations of wrongful discharge, there are a plethora of business-related matters that many business owners have to address. However, in Miami and throughout Florida, it is very important for business owners to understand federal laws against employment discrimination in order to reduce the likelihood of a dispute and protect their company from lawsuits. Also, for those who are already in the middle of a dispute, it is imperative to identify the appropriate course of action.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission published an overview of federal laws which prohibit employment discrimination. If a business fails to abide by these laws, they may find themselves in the middle of a costly and time-consuming business dispute. Employers are not allowed to treat employees unfairly as a result of their gender, ethnicity, religious beliefs, pregnancy status, age or disability. Furthermore, managers and co-workers are also prohibited from treating employees unfairly because of these factors. Employers are also responsible for providing reasonable workplace accommodations for any religious beliefs and disabilities their employees have and cannot retaliate against an employee who has complained about employment discrimination.

According to the United States Courts' website, more than 11,700 civil rights employment cases were filed over a 12 month period ending in March 2013, which shows just how many companies are dealing with business litigation. Although some business owners who are in this position do not know which steps to take next, there are a number of ways they can outline the best path forward, such as talking to an experienced attorney and comprehensively analyzing the details of the situation.
